Mobile-first app to help reduce patient harm, readmissions, care delays and financial barriers
NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – June 25, 2025 – Altera Digital Health, a global health IT leader, today announced the launch of Sunrise™ CarePath, a mobile patient engagement platform designed to close communication gaps and reduce adverse events, readmissions and financial barriers. Fully integrated with the Sunrise™ EHR, Sunrise CarePath delivers capabilities including real-time secure messaging, self-scheduling, patient notifications and appointment reminders, and online billing integration. Sunrise CarePath, compatible with version 22.1, is now generally available to mid-size hospital and health system clients.
Research suggests approximately 20% of patients experience adverse events within three weeks of hospital discharge, many of which are preventable. To bolster patient-provider communication, during and beyond the critical post-discharge period, Sunrise CarePath includes on-demand messaging that connects patients to care team members. Enabling patients to quickly clarify discharge instructions and report side effects in real time will help prevent avoidable emergency department (ED) visits and readmissions while also supporting patient confidence and continuity of care.
Sunrise CarePath also offers instant appointment management and intelligent rescheduling/cancellation capabilities to help reduce missed appointments hindering proper medication management, timely interventions, care quality and hospital revenue. To further empower patients and encourage care plan adherence, Sunrise CarePath includes notifications for new health data and appointment reminders customized to the patient’s communication preferences. Additionally, Sunrise CarePath integrates with hospital bill pay pages, enabling patients to pay medical bills in a paperless, convenient and secure manner. This removes friction from the patient financial experience and speeds up revenue collection, while also reducing administrative burdens for healthcare organizations.
“When patients can’t easily message their care team, manage follow-up appointments or stay on track with medications, adverse events are inevitable,” said Jay Adams, Executive Vice President and General Manager for Sunrise, Altera Digital Health. “Sunrise CarePath gives hospitals powerful tools to close these gaps—helping clinicians protect patients and drive better outcomes after discharge. This level of engagement is key to delivering truly patient-centric care.”

Nearly 700 new features and enhancements to drive financial and clinical improvements
NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – June 17, 2025 – Altera Digital Health, a global health IT leader, today announced the general availability of Sunrise™ 25.1, the latest release of its complete electronic health record (EHR) system for mid-size hospitals and health systems. Designed in close collaboration with clients, Sunrise 25.1 introduces nearly 700 updates and new features that sharpen financial and ambulatory workflows, streamline navigation, minimize the cognitive load for users and make critical information accessible at the point of care.
While hospital margins improved in 2024, healthcare organizations continue to grapple with competitive labor market conditions, increasing costs and a rise in bad debt and charity care. Sunrise 25.1 addresses these realities by embedding best-practice workflows and flexible configuration tools that support revenue integrity, clinical productivity and enterprise-wide efficiency. For example, the Sunrise™ Financial Manager module contains a billing hub that consolidates billing requests, claims and self-pay into three easily accessible tabs that streamline workflows for staff members across the revenue cycle.
Sunrise 25.1 also represents a significant uplift in clinical workflow satisfaction and efficiency for clients. Within Sunrise™ Ambulatory Care, enhanced patient management features include a unified list for appointments and walk-ins, easy location viewing, enhanced visual cues and clinical assignments, and new mini-views that enable users to toggle between patients with a single click. On the acute side, users can enter, view and maintain orders at the patient level and enter queries without exact search term requirements. Additionally, Sunrise™ Mobile’s new, intuitive icons and modernized user interface enable clinicians to use the system more seamlessly so they can focus more on patient care.
“This release brings meaningful advancements to the front lines of care and operations, delivering tools that help teams move faster, work smarter and make strides where it matters most to them,” said Shanna DeLeo, SVP of Development for Sunrise, Altera Digital Health. “Sunrise 25.1 is a direct result of listening to our clients and a commitment to continuous progress. I am incredibly proud of the Sunrise team for delivering on our promise to keep elevating healthcare for clinicians, staff members and the patients they serve.”

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust has become the first trust in Greater Manchester to implement district nurse referrals in its Sunrise™ Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system, powered by Altera Digital Health. It marks a major digital leap forward in integrating care across secondary and community services.
Clunky paper processes and fragmented communication have been replaced with a streamlined, digital workflow, enhancing patient safety and enabling teams to deliver faster, coordinated care across care settings.
Zoe Fitzsimmons, CXIO at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, summed up the impact: “The district nurse referral within Sunrise has been transformative for the acute and district nursing teams. Now with one single source of truth, the teams no longer have to duplicate work or spend time investigating if a referral has been completed. This single process allows for one route to referral.”
With referral forms now fully embedded into the Electronic Patient Record (EPR), clinical teams can manage referrals directly within their existing workflow therefore there is no need to switch between systems. This streamlined approach has now not only boosted efficiency but has also enhanced user satisfaction. As referrals are created, key patient information is auto-populated from the EPR, saving staff time and reducing the risk of manual errors. It’s a smarter, faster way to handle referrals so clinicians can focus more on patient care and less on administration.
Take wound care as an example: when a patient has been assessed by the tissue viability team, detailed notes, treatment plans, and medication information are automatically pulled through into the referral. District nurses no longer need to chase down information; they’re fully briefed before their visit. As a result, they arrive at the patient’s home with the right dressings, supplies, and clear plan of care. It’s a seamless handover that reduces delays, enhances efficiency, and ensures patients receive safe, informed continuous care.
Patient safety was at the heart of the implementation. A significant portion of the rollout focused on aligning the referral process with complex transcribing and medication policies to ensure full compliance. The referral form was intelligently designed with mandatory fields, embedded guidance, real-time prompts, and conditional logic ensuring that no critical information is missed before submission. It’s a smart, safety-first approach that gives clinical teams confidence while reducing the risk of errors.
The results speak for themselves: reduced patient incidents, fewer inappropriate referrals, and stronger clinical oversight, all supported by a complete, traceable audit trail. The streamlined process also delivers measurable time savings across multiple stages of the referral pathway, enabling clinicians to focus more on care and less on admin. It’s a safer, more efficient system that drives real operational and clinical value.
“We ran time and motion studies and found nurses were spending approximately two hours a day ringing the wards to compile missing referral information so we could triage the referrals correctly, said Stacey Leigh, Digital Matron and Digital Clinical Safety Officer at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust. “The teams would also run into issues when contacting the wards if members of staff who completed the form weren’t on shift and the information couldn’t be located.”
All community triage nurses and district nurse managers now have read access to the Sunrise EPR system, enabling them to review the patient’s clinical course, including the most recent admission and previous visits. Zoe Fitzsimmons added: “This will be enhanced further when the community teams go fully live on Sunrise later this year and can continue to document in the patient records as a seamless entry from acute to community.”
Referrals are now sent directly to a dedicated list within Sunrise, eliminating reliance on email and reducing the risk of missed or delayed communications. Each referral includes a direct link to the patient’s full EPR record, giving district nursing teams immediate access to all relevant information. They can quickly accept or decline the referral, while acute staff can track the referral status in real time, ensuring nothing falls through the cracks and everyone stays aligned throughout the patient’s care journey.
Rachael Fox, Executive Vice President, EMEA at Altera Digital Health, commented: “The progress at Bolton is a testament to what can be achieved with Altera’s highly configurable and flexible Sunrise EPR with a clear vision and a robust digital infrastructure. By embedding referrals directly into the EPR, Bolton has significantly improved communication and coordination between acute and community teams, enhancing both safety and efficiency.
What’s even more exciting is how this work is expanding access to comprehensive patient information within community care, enabling clinicians to have real-time visibility into treatment plans, clinical notes, and medications, empowering them to deliver informed, proactive care from the moment of discharge.
This is a powerful example of how our Sunrise platform enables continuous care across the entire healthcare setting, breaking down silos and creating a truly unified patient record. We’re proud to be supporting Bolton as it extends these capabilities further and unlocks even greater value across more community services and care pathways.”

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. and CORAL GABLES, Fla. – June 10, 2025 – Altera Digital Health, a global health IT leader, today announced a strategic partnership with Health Gorilla, a leading national interoperability platform and Qualified Health Information Network (QHIN) delivering real-time, structured, AI-ready health data. The collaboration will enable seamless data exchange across care settings, giving clinicians faster, more complete access to actionable patient data.
Through the partnership, Altera will integrate Health Gorilla’s national interoperability network into its Sunrise electronic health record (EHR) platform for mid-size hospitals and health systems. This will enable Sunrise clients to access longitudinal patient records—including labs, encounters, medications, and social determinants of health details—directly within their existing EHR workflows, enabling faster, better-informed clinical decisions without the need for manual data gathering or outside portals.
“This partnership is about clearing a path to better care,” said Jay Adams, Executive Vice President, Sunrise, Altera Digital Health. “It’s not just about interoperability for its own sake—it’s about removing the barriers that slow clinicians down. Our work with Health Gorilla is a direct investment in reducing friction, surfacing meaningful data and giving providers the tools they need to make clinical decisions with confidence.”
With this integration, Altera joins a growing network of Health Gorilla-connected EHR vendors, including MEDITECH, MEDHOST, Resmed and Canvas Medical. The expanded connectivity that comes through this partnership will allow Altera clients to securely exchange health data across a broad and diverse healthcare ecosystem. The partnership will also support Altera clients in meeting federal interoperability mandates and enable deeper participation in value-based care initiatives by improving access to holistic, real-time patient information.
“Providers still struggle with fragmented data that slows down care and burdens decision-making,” said Bob Watson, CEO of Health Gorilla. “By embedding our QHIN-enabled connectivity into the Sunrise EHR, Altera is taking a significant step toward making comprehensive health data securely available at the point of care—supporting faster, more accurate decisions and better-coordinated outcomes.”

Class action lawsuit recovery services to streamline filing for hospitals and providers
Niagara Falls, N.Y. — June 4, 2025 — Altera Digital Health, a global healthcare IT leader, today announced it has entered into an agreement with Managed Care Advisory Group, Inc. (MCAG), one of the largest revenue recovery consulting firms, to bring MCAG’s class action lawsuit recovery services to hospitals and providers. MCAG will help eligible healthcare parties navigate the claims filing process and recover funds from class action lawsuit settlements, including the $2.8 billion Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) provider settlement. Eligible healthcare providers will be required to enter into an agreement with MCAG (which includes a contingent fee) to obtain this service.
While eligible individuals and organizations can submit class action settlement claims directly, providers and small/medium-sized hospitals often lack the time, resources and in-house experience to effectively manage intensive claims processes. MCAG has helped fill these gaps for approximately 1,400 hospitals, recovering more than $500 million in funds by preparing required documentation and working with settlement administrators to reconcile and allocate appropriate settlement distributions. With a settlement claims period spanning July 2008–October 2024, the BCBS class action lawsuit exemplifies the level of complexity MCAG is prepared to handle on behalf of healthcare clients.
“No healthcare provider should be denied damages they’re rightfully owed due to the immense administrative burdens that class action lawsuit filing places on class members,” said Jonathan Gadd, EVP, Business Development, MCAG. “We look forward to working with Altera’s clients, doing the heavy lifting for them and streamlining all stages of filing so they can focus on patients, not paperwork and processes.”
Altera provides clinical, interoperability, financial and operational health IT solutions to a variety of stakeholders including mid-size hospitals and health systems with Sunrise™; rural, critical access and community hospitals with Paragon® Denali; and independent provider practices with TouchWorks® EHR. In addition to these solutions, Altera offers cloud hosting, technical support and managed services that enable healthcare organizations of all sizes to drive better experiences for their clinicians, staff members and the patients they serve.
“At Altera Digital Health, we endeavor to be true partners to our clients, and that includes connecting them with third-party experts and solutions that can further support their strategic goals and financial wellbeing,” said Marcus Perez, President, Altera Digital Health. “Providers deserve to be paid fully for the essential care they provide. Our relationship with MCAG will help them to recover what they’re owed without straining their time, resources or staff.”
Eligible Altera clients, hospitals and providers interested in working with MCAG to file a claim in the BCBS class action lawsuit ahead of the July 29, 2025, filing deadline can learn more here.

Australia, May 2025 – Altera Digital Health is proud to announce the successful activation of its integrated operating theatre system at Latrobe Regional Health (LRH), one of the hospital members of Gippsland Health Alliance (GHA). GHA has been leveraging Sunrise as its enterprise-wide electronic health record (EHR) platform, utilising Microsoft Azure to enhance interoperability, security, and scalability across its network.
As part of its ongoing digital transformation, GHA has now implemented an anaesthesia information management system (AIMS) platform called Provation® iPro to integrate with Sunrise at LRH. This milestone deployment of Sunrise Surgical Care and Provation iPro AIMS streamlines theatre management and clinical documentation, enabling efficient surgical scheduling and ensuring a seamless patient experience with a single clinical record from pre-admission to discharge.
A Streamlined Approach to Theatre Management
The successful deployment of Sunrise Surgical Care at LRH marks the first implementation of this advanced surgical management solution in Australia. Fully integrated with Sunrise EHR, Sunrise Surgical Care enhances efficiency by enabling real-time tracking of theatre utilisation, optimised scheduling, and improved resource allocation. This implementation reinforces LRH’s commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centric care by reducing administrative burdens and ensuring timely access to critical surgical data.
Sunrise Surgical Care also plays a key role in supporting a continuous, single patient record from perioperative care to discharge. By providing clinicians with a comprehensive view of each patient’s surgical journey, the system strengthens communication between healthcare providers and enhances patient safety and outcomes.
Additionally, the deployment of the Provation iPro AIMS platform spans 12 operating theatres and 18 Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) beds at LRH. Designed by practicing anaesthetists, Provation iPro streamlines electronic anaesthesia documentation throughout the entire perioperative encounter, standardises the collection of quality measures, and even streamlines billing processes.
Provation iPro’s integration with Sunrise Surgical Care creates a seamless user experience, eliminating manual, redundant data entry. With this technology, Pre-Admissions clinics have transitioned from paper to digital records, populating data from Pre-Admission assessments into the day-of-surgery record, streamlining the theatre admission process.
Provation iPro’s autovitals feature wirelessly streams patient vitals from anaesthesia monitor machines directly into the clinical record. With this, alongside a number of other thoughtful features, including picture-documentation, pre-filled procedure templates, and hard-stops, providers can refocus their attention on the patient while simultaneously producing a more complete, compliant, legible anaesthesia record.
Unlike traditional paper systems, these digital records can now be accessed and viewed by multiple clinicians across multiple locations simultaneously, enhancing collaboration and ensuring all relevant information is available in real time.
To keep families informed, LRH has introduced a “Patient Procedure Tracker” board in waiting areas, providing real-time updates on which stage of the theatre journey their loved one is in — whether they are in pre-op, surgery, or recovery. This helps reduce uncertainty and minimises the need for calls to reception.
Advancing Digital Transformation in Healthcare
Latrobe Regional Health’s adoption of this operating theatre system marks a significant step in its digital transformation journey. By leveraging advanced clinical technology, LRH is setting a new standard for theatre efficiency, patient management, and operational effectiveness.
Jon Millar, Chief Operating Officer at LRH, added, “This deployment at LRH showcases our strong partnership with Altera. Leveraging this technology enhances patient experiences and ensures seamless care delivery across our facility. Performing more than 10,000 surgical procedures per year, LRH is utilising this system to enhance efficiency, streamline workflows, and improve patient care. The ability to maintain a single clinical record from pre-admission to discharge is a game-changer for both staff and patients.”
Todd Haebich, EVP, APAC at Altera Digital Health, shared, “The successful activation of Sunrise Surgical Care and Provation iPro at Latrobe Regional Health is a significant milestone for Altera, Provation, and Gippsland Health Alliance. By equipping healthcare facilities with advanced tools, we empower clinicians to enhance patient care while optimising workflows. This deployment highlights our ongoing commitment to supporting digital innovation in healthcare.”
Enhancing Patient Care Through Integration
This launch aligns with the recent $223.5 million expansion of Latrobe Regional Health in Traralgon, which has significantly increased the hospital’s capacity and services. With this multi-stage project now complete, local families can access world-class care closer to home, further strengthening the impact of Sunrise Surgical Care and Provation iPro in delivering high-quality patient outcomes.
For clinicians, these systems reduce the need for manual data entry, produce legible, complete anaesthesia records, minimise duplication of records, and enhance visibility into real-time theatre utilisation. These efficiencies contribute to better resource planning, fewer delays, and improved surgical outcomes.
Commitment to Innovation and Excellence
This deployment reinforces Altera’s commitment to supporting healthcare innovation across the region, ensuring that hospitals and clinicians have the tools they need to deliver exceptional care now and into the future.

Australia, April 2025 – Altera Digital Health is proud to announce the successful statewide activation of the Sunrise™ Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Patient Administration System (PAS) across all South Australian public hospitals. South Australia Health and Altera Digital Health are delighted that South Australia is the first state in Australia to activate a statewide EMR and PAS across all hospitals and health services in both metropolitan and rural areas. This milestone marks a major advancement in digital healthcare transformation, providing clinicians with a fully integrated, real-time patient record system that enhances efficiency, improves care coordination, and optimises patient outcomes.
The patient electronic medical record used in South Australia is a state-based system called Sunrise EMR & PAS (Sunrise EMR), which integrates electronic medical records (EMR) and patient administration systems (PAS) into a unified platform. This system ensures that clinicians across the state have real-time access to patient data, promoting coordinated, patient-centered care throughout South Australia’s public healthcare network.
The Sunrise EMR platform is now live across almost 100 sites throughout South Australia, ensuring that patients’ medical histories, treatment plans, and clinical data are accessible across the state’s public health system. This initiative represents a significant step toward a connected and efficient healthcare network, enabling providers to deliver safer, more informed, and timely care.
Transforming Healthcare in One of the World’s Largest Healthcare Jurisdictions
South Australia is the fourth-largest state in Australia, covering 983,482 square kilometres—a landmass significantly larger than any European country. To put it in perspective, South Australia is:
- About 10 times the size of the UK
- About 5 times the size of Germany
- 5 times the size of Texas
- Larger than any U.S. state except for Alaska
Despite its vast geographical expanse, South Australia has a low population density of approximately 1.7 people per square kilometer, presenting unique challenges in delivering consistent, high-quality healthcare across remote, rural, and metropolitan areas. The activation of Sunrise EMR ensures that no matter where a patient receives care—whether in the heart of Adelaide or a regional hospital hundreds of kilometers away—their medical information is instantly available to clinicians.
Key Benefits of a Statewide EMR
The activation of Sunrise EMR eliminates paper-based processes and integrates real-time patient information, enabling healthcare professionals to make faster, data-driven clinical decisions.
- A single, continuous patient record across all SA public hospitals, ensuring seamless care transitions.
- Real-time access to clinical information, reducing duplication of tests and improving patient safety.
- Integrated workflows that streamline hospital operations and support better resource management.
- Enhanced communication between care teams, ensuring coordinated treatment and improved patient experiences.
A Milestone in South Australia’s Digital Health Strategy
This statewide activation aligns with South Australia’s long-term digital health strategy, which aims to modernise hospital systems and improve patient outcomes through advanced technology. By implementing Sunrise EMR, SA Health is future-proofing its healthcare infrastructure, ensuring that clinicians have the right information at the right time to deliver high-quality, patient-centric care.
Demonstrating System Utilisation
The Sunrise EMR system is already making a significant impact across South Australia’s public health network:
- 5 million+ people have a Sunrise electronic medical record, ensuring continuity of care across the state.
- Over 18 million inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department (ED) encounters have been recorded in the system.
- More than 4,900 hospital beds across South Australia are managed within Sunrise.
- On average, 9,300+ concurrent users access the system at any given time, supporting real-time clinical decision-making.
- 921,687 patients have attended multiple Sunrise-enabled sites, demonstrating the system’s effectiveness in linking care across different locations.
Commitment to Innovation and Excellence
Altera Digital Health has been a part of South Australia’s digital healthcare journey, supporting the rollout of Sunrise EMR with dedicated implementation, training, and support.
Todd Haebich, EVP, APAC at Altera Digital Health, shared, “The successful activation of Sunrise EMR across all SA public hospitals is a testament to our strong partnership with SA Health. By leveraging the power of a unified, real-time electronic medical record, we are helping to drive meaningful improvements in patient care, operational efficiency, and clinical collaboration throughout the state.”
Looking Ahead
With Sunrise EMR now fully deployed across South Australia’s public hospitals and health services, including in the regions, the focus will shift towards optimising its use and expanding digital health initiatives to further enhance care delivery. SA Health and Altera Digital Health remain committed to leveraging healthcare technology to improve patient outcomes for all South Australians
