Reducing documentation time keeps the focus on patient care

URL Copied!

Documentation burden isn’t just a buzz-y concept. For years, healthcare organizations have struggled to protect their clinicians’ time and well-being. And while healthcare evolves, documentation burden is still a prime cause of burnout among clinicians. To that end, across the industry, research shows physicians can spend up to 35% of their workdays on documentation, with as much as two hours of EHR-related work for every hour of direct patient care.

Clinicians deserve better

If you ask a clinician why they pursued healthcare as a profession, it is unlikely they’ll respond with, “to stare a computer screen and type.” Of course, documentation is a necessary part of the job, but it truly only is one part.  Clinicians entered healthcare to care for patients. To be healers. To be trusted. To help. Excessive documentation contributes to burnout and reduced patient-facing time. It adds to disruption in care and can result in staff turnover. At Altera, we see how this can affect patient care so we set out to provide technology that helps put the clinician back in front of patients, to listen and to treat.

The value Altera delivers

Across 17 Sunrise client sites, we measured the total elapsed time from note creation through final review and signature across all contributors to the documentation workflow. With Sunrise’s help, these clients reported a median hours-per-note decrease from 5.6 hours to 3.4 hours. That’s a 39% reduction.

But it means much more: on top of completing critical documentation more quickly, it also empowers clinicians to be patient-centered and focused on care.

What this means for healthcare organizations everywhere

With documentation times reduced, your organization can see clear value from:

  • Retention and cost avoidance: Replacing a single physician can cost $500,000 to $1.3 million in recruitment, onboarding and lost productivity. Reducing one of the leading drivers of burnout helps reduce turnover risk.

  • Continuity of care: Reducing documentation burden supports clinician retention, helping preserve patient-provider relationships and improve consistency of care.

  • Operational efficiency: Even modest reductions in documentation time can create meaningful gains across a service line through reduced overtime, improved scheduling flexibility and increased clinical capacity.

This is what we do. This is the power of Sunrise. Learn more here.
